If not, please tell which parts of the area are nice to live in. What is your opinion of the school system in Philadelphia? Would I be better to consider moving further out in Bucks County?

Elkins Park is not in the City of Philadelphia. It is in Cheltenham Township. (with a little bit in Abingtion Township). It is an older suburb, with an interestingly diverse population and a variety of housing styles. The Cheltenham School District is equally diverse, and very well regarded. The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Natanyahu graduated from Cheltenham High School.
Elkins park is also not in Buck County, it is in Montgomery County, where there are several excellent school districts. I have seen your questions before, and this is a far cry from looking for a place to live in Allentown.
Why don’t you just tell us where you work, or where you need to be, and we can tell you about nearby communities.

I formerly lived in Elkins Park, and now live in a community adjacent to it. First of all, Elkins Park is not in Philadelphia. It is in Montgomery County. A small part of it is in Abington Township. Most of it is in Cheltenham township. There are parts of Elkins Park that are not so nice- the area closest to Cheltenham Ave. It is much nicer the closer you get to Township Line Ave. In some areas you will see large estates with huge acreage.
Since there are good and bad areas, you would have to come out and see the different neighborhoods. Cheltenham High School is a very good school. The grade schools in the better neighborhoods would probably be very good.
There are many churches and many synogogues. The better shopping areas are a short drive out of Elkins Park. Theres’s some parks, and an iceskating rink.
And yes, Bill Cosby has a home here. It’s one of the larger ones.

Elkins Park is in Montgomery County — it is a nice area. The school systems in that area are great! Just above Elkins Park is Abington [named #18 Suburban towns to live in], Glenside, Jenkintown, Willow Grove, Horsham, Hatboro. Farther North is Doylestown, Warminster, Warrington — all nice areas. As for Philadelphia Schools, stay away — unless you’re going to invest in a private school.
I would stay in Montgomery or Bucks County.

The school system in Philadelphia is basically a joke. There is to much violence and most of the teachers don’t care to teach (at least that was the case when I went there)
Elkins Park is a nice area. Yahoo Real Estate just named my town #5 in the country in terms of affordability and crime. But I’m farther west. Elkins Park children go to Cheltenham’s school district. Which from what I have been told is not as good as Abington’s schools. They are basically the same area, but different schools because of the amount of taxes taken in by the district.
The schools out my way are just as good as in Abington, BUT I have to give Abington’s school district the win on that one because they have full day kindergarten, where my district still only does half days.
Regardless of where you go pretty much anywhere OUTSIDE of Philly is better then Philly.
