Then We Will Love

Can we officially declare the flu season over and another year passed without pandemic bird flu threatened by gloom and doomsayers? What would we do without those reporters camped out at the Center for Disease Control or embedded with the American Medical Association who chill us with news of the latest medical scourge?

One time there was an epidemic. Rome, in the mid-200’s. It killed so many citizens of the empire historians say it was the economic beginning of the end for the Caesars. It was also the start of the rapid growth of Christianity, and here’s why. While the unbelievers, even the famous doctor and writer, Galen, fled Rome, deserting the dying, the Christians stayed and cared for the afflicted! A third of those cared for by Christians, some strangers and even former persecutors, survived! Many became Christians! Even the most cynical pagan marveled–“See how they love one another!”

I hope we don’t need bird flu next year to move us to show how we love one another. I think Jesus’ words will be motivation enough.

Then We Will Love.

1. For the glory of God (31-33).

2. For the blessing of mankind (34-35).

So many acts of love shine in the darkness. So, too, Jesus’ command to Christian love emerges from the darkness. It was the Thursday before Jesus’ death. He had just predicted Judas betraying him and Judas had just stormed out of the upper room where Jesus and the rest of the disciples would share the Lord’s Supper. John tellingly recalls, “And it was night. ”

“When Judas was gone, Jesus said, ‘Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, then God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once (31-33). ’”

Events were set in motion that would lead to Jesus’ death on the cross. It would happen so soon, that Jesus uses this moment to say his final farewell to his disciples. “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come (34). ” Well, why would Jesus’ death on the cross bring glory to God, such glory that God himself would glorify the Son?

We’ll get to that in a moment, but I don’t want to pass by that word, glorify. Five times Jesus uses it in two verses. What does it mean to glorify someone? I know what glorified rice is—rice sweetened up with custard and fruit so it has a zillion calories per teaspoon—but what does it mean to glorify someone?

To glorify someone means to have a good opinion about someone, to praise them, to hold them in high esteem. For everyone to do this! Now it is hard to find anyone whom we all hold in high esteem. We all hold President Bush and his policies in high esteem. Um, not all of us. We all hold the Senate majority leader, our Senator Harry Reid in high esteem. Um, not all of us. Governor Gibbons? Nope. Mayor Goodman? Uh-uh. Councilman Andy Hafen? Evidently not if he only won by 162 votes. You see how hard it is for all of us to hold someone in high esteem, to glorify them?

But Jesus’ death on the cross would glorify God. Ever since the Garden of Eden, God has been slandered. The devil tempted Eve, insinuating God was holding out on Eve and jerking her chain. Adam and Eve, when they sinned, hid from God, expecting only punishment from him. When King Ahab meets the prophet Elijah after the famine, he calls God’s prophet, “you troubler of Israel (2 Kings 17). ” Don’t you see the reputation God has with those controlled by the sinful human nature? He causes trouble. He mercilessly punishes. He is jealous of our pleasures and tries to limit them.

That’s the way the world still looks at God—he causes troubles in marriages where husband and wife do not share the same faith, so better not to go to church and anger the spouse. He is out to get the “Good Time Charlie” when the liver gives out. Church is the last place the young buck wants to go with his little doe, because he doesn’t want to treat her respectfully and honorably.

No words of appreciation for God from that bunch, from our sinful human nature. But Jesus’ death on the cross reveals these false estimations of God for the lies they are. God is not the troubler—he is the Savior, the reconciler, who knocked off that chip we had on our shoulder. He is not the punishing God, he is the forgiving God whose Son took the punishment of sin upon himself for us. He is the God who wants us to experience lasting and real happiness, not the stolen lust of a moment. He wants us in heaven with him after we have led a happy and productive life we can be proud of here.

Anyone who doesn’t think of God like this really should have his or her head (or heart) examined.

Because Jesus did this, God the Father glorified Jesus by raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand, King of kings and Lord of lords.

But what does this have to do with love? Plenty. It is the reason we love!

“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another (34-35). ”

Remember the Roman plague of 252 AD and the pagan reaction to courageous Christians tending to the sick? Isn’t that what Jesus said would happen? Think of all the hospitals Christians built in this country and throughout the world. If it weren’t for the Lutherans and the Catholics, there wouldn’t be a hospital at all back in my folks’ town of 50,000 people, La Crosse, Wisconsin! Come to think of it, there wouldn’t be any in Henderson, Nevada, 231,000 strong! Orphanages—religious. Even today Catholic Social Services seems to be the biggest place for adoptions in Clark County. Did you know the first Kindergarten in America was started in the town I went to college, Watertown, Wisconsin, by a Lutheran? General charitable giving? Christians lead the pack, outdistancing Muslims, Jews and pagans alike.

What makes this commandment new? Everybody will, to a certain extent, love their friends and hate their enemies. Jesus calls us to love our friends and love our enemies. That’s the parable of the Good Samaritan. That’s the start of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount—bless those who curse you; do good to those who persecute you. In our response to other people’s problems, like hunger in Africa, AIDS, the Christmas tsunami and Gulf Coast hurricanes, we are showing love to others whom we normally wouldn’t even think about.

But what really makes it a new command is the role model. “As I have loved you, so you must love one another (34). ” As Jesus loved us. Hmm. Wait! That’s a one-sided love, a love that loves without needing or demanding to be loved back. That kind of love led Jesus to put away the glories and luxuries and perks of heaven to be born in a barn, raised in poverty, be misunderstood by his own people, betrayed by one of his closest friends, dragged before a kangaroo court, publicly executed as a terrible criminal and his lifeless body thrown into a borrowed tomb. He did all this for us, not for himself. He was already 100% God when he put it all away to become human. He couldn’t be 110% God afterwards. There was literally nothing in it for him. He did it all for us, that we might live forever.

“Show that love,” Jesus told his disciples, as he tells us, and everybody will know that you belong to me.

There are two ways to make a church grow. One is preach the Word, but rely on gimmicks to keep the people riled up and excited enough to drag other people in. A lot of the megachurches go in for this and, after a few years, have burned through enough of the population that the charismatic preacher leaves for greener pastures, usually in an even larger church in an even larger metropolitan area.

Here’s the other way, and I will be very blunt to recommend this way to Green Valley Evangelical Lutheran Church. Preach the Word and do what it says. That’s what I have endeavored to do all my years here. I have preached the Word to you, week after week, season after season, year after year. I have loved you, shown you compassion and care, calling you by name, laughing with you, crying with you. I think for that reason almost every one of our members considers me a friend as well as their pastor and the door, if I were on their front step, would open without hesitation.

Do you show that compassion as fellow brothers and sisters in the faith? It is so easy to be caught up with family, to be a slave to the job, to be buried in a busy schedule, or ensnared by the idolatry of sports that America serves. But Jesus did not call us to love our own. He called us to love the other. Jesus did not direct us to shun the Word and the worship, but to flock to it out of habit and custom. Do we know our fellow brothers and sisters in the faith? Do we want to know their needs, so we can pitch in? Do we want to know their strengths so we don’t have to reduplicate their efforts? Do we have a church so caring that an outsider would say, “That’s the church I want to belong to—look how they love one another!”

I say this not to our shame, for I can hardly blame anything in this congregation on my predecessor! He is me! But I say this to urge us all on ever more, as if we were just starting this church out all over again. Don’t let your love for each other grow cold. Make the fellowship of this congregation and service from this congregation a high priority, not just something you will do if there’s nothing else on your calendar.

I’ve preached way too long and it isn’t ending as joyfully as I wanted it to end. But out of the darkness, Jesus’ love calls forth our love. That is always my hope, that the words of Jesus will be realized in each one of us, for

Breckenridge Colorado Real Estate Maintains Itself in Harsh Climate

There are a lot of similarities between resort towns across the U. S. Most of them are there for their fabulous snow and slopes, or have become attractive due to the notable celebrity of the moment making it fashionable to live there. However, whether the real estate landscape has any indicative mark on its quality, Breckenridge has held its own in the land buying market. Much of this is because her core audience does not intend to move anytime soon.
Breckenridge has a lot of permanent homes in the area, mostly because of it’s proximity to Denver. The Denver Sprawl is a good sign of big time population boom, and more and more retirees in the area come to Breckenridge to have as a second home. It’s thought by some real estate agents that baby boomers are looking for a place to, not only get away for fun, but were their families can meet for a weekend or holiday, while taking in the sights and sport.
Like most of the country, the wave of foreclosure loans hit the Denver area pretty hard leaving a lot of empty homes and desperate sellers. However Breckenridge homes sales have seen their local real estate market pretty even. It has not really followed the national trend and this may be due to a loyal core group who has hung on to their investment property.
One statistic that contradicts that Breckenridge is in a slumping market is that, although the whole of Summit County saw about a 14% decline in sales from 2007 to 2008, there was also a spike in average price of the homes by about 19%. This probably means that the few of those who are actually are selling are in not that big of a hurry to sell and realize there is high value in the property, especially due to the surrounding attractions and convenient access to the big city of Denver via the I-80.
Another statistic about second home buyers (who a majority of Breckenridge’s buyers are) is that when the National Association of Realtors did a national survey, they found that 38% planned to keep their home 11 years or more, with a median time of 10 years.
Vacation homes in total are actually bucking the trend. And another reason that the National Association of Realtors thought believed this to be true is that second home buyers from foreign countries are learning of popular vacation home spots like Breckenridge Colorado. Real Estate in Breckenridge seems to be in the crosshairs of a unique group of interested parties.

What Little Rock, Arkansas Real Estate Has to Offer

In addition to being a state capital city and county seat, the 117 square mile plot of real estate known as Little Rock, Arkansas is also home to nearly 200,000 residents, the entire metropolitan area enjoying a population of over 840,000, making it the state’s most populated city.
What makes up today’s Little Rock, Arkansas real estate had humble beginnings. For several millennia prior to the arrival of the Europeans on the land, it was occupied by Native Americans of several different tribes. It wasn’t until 1541 when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto came through that the takeover by Europe began.
A small rock formation was used by explorers and settlers as a landmark throughout Little Rock’s early settlement history. In fact, a French explorer even gave the formation the name of “La Petite Roche,” which is where the city derives its name.

During the day, the River Market District includes a nostalgic bazaar-style market hall, while from April to October a farmer’s market is open. The Willow Springs Water Park is a popular attraction, but also has historical significance as one of the nation’s first water theme parks built in 1928.
Little Rock also houses Arkansas’ only zoo and the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) headquarters. Each year, the World Taekwondo Championships are held there.
Notable Residents
Music is an important part of Little Rock’s night life. As such, the city has produced some notable musicians including the band Evanescence, scat singer Richard Boone, Christian metal band Living Sacrifice, Green Day backup guitarist Jason White, and Jazz musicians Art Porter, Sr. and Jr.
Other well-known residents include General Douglas McArthur, Gil Gerard (actor who played Buck Rogers during the 1979-1981 television series), General Wesley Clark, as well as several famous athletes from sports such as basketball, football, and boxing.
So it could be said that Little Rock, Arkansas real estate is a great place to visit, and perhaps even a better place to live.

Delayed Gratification

Hal was on a trip away from home. Far enough to know that no one, meaning his wife, could possibly find out he was having the time of his life. The drinks were being charged to his new company expense account and for the first time ever – in a place like this – he was a hit. He was buying for two drop dead gorgeous women in spaghetti-strap dresses barely concealing their very obvious charms. They were pressing their breasts against his arms from either side and laughing in stereo at everything he said. He knew it was the money he was laying on the bar, but he didn’t care. He had earned it and it was what set him apart from other men. Tonight he was celebrating his appointment to Western Sales Manager. Top Dog, number one on the left coast and starting tonight he intended to upgrade his lifestyle to reflect it.

He raised his glass in a silent salute to the doctor-type glowering at him from the other end of the bar. Eat your heart out, Chump, he grinned to himself, now they are with me.

He threw his head back like Bogie in Casablanca and downed a shot of Makers Mark in one gulp. It burned all the way down and brought tears to his eyes. He wanted to grab his water chaser, but he wanted to impress the two women more so he kept his cool and looked at them in the mirror and gave them a wink. The one on the left was blonde. A Sharon Stone look alike and each time she pulled on his arm to whisper in his ear, he leaned over and snuck a peek down the front of her dress. Her breasts were perfect. Round and firm with her nipples protruding through the thin fabric like peanut M&Ms on softballs. He laughed and nodded as if he were listening, but all he could think about was touching her. He was sure that she could not possibly be wearing anything underneath her dress and images of her tanned, lithe, naked body kept synapsing across his brain like the midnight fireworks at Disneyland. He pulled his handkerchief and dabbed at the little beads of perspiration gathering on his upper lip. He had never been close to this before. Desire began to well up inside him. He wanted to run his hands all over her body – both of their bodies!

The brunette was every bit as tasty as her companion. Each time she looked up through her lashes at him or ran her tongue across her teeth he knew she thought him only as attractive as his money, but he didn’t care. He laid another hundred dollar bill on the bar and they both laughed. She bit her lower lip like the sexy models in the commercials and leaned in even closer putting her hand on his thigh. Her touch was at once both sensuous and electric. An indescribable thrill ran through him. Hal had never “scored” before, but he knew this was it. The kind of night he had only rarely dared fantasize about knowing it could never happen to someone like him. But tonight the world was different. Tonight he knew he couldn’t lose. It was good to be King.

The two women had been with the yuppie down the bar when Hal had come in flashing his bankroll and a new pinkie ring worth more than a new Cadillac. He had immediately taken over giving instructions like he owned the place and once the bartender got a look at the wad of hundred dollar bills he anticipated Hal’s every need and doted on him like royalty. Hal was thrilled, but tried to act as if he expected this kind of treatment. Like he

did this kind of thing every day – walked into trendy bars and picked up the best looking women in the place. He made sure his tips were frequent and generous enough to insure the bartender’s devotion. The women were obviously impressed.

Fortified with self-importance fueled by the combination of bourbon and attention, he looked around the room at the dark wood, etched glass and brass. Ties everywhere, beautiful women dripping with expensive jewelry, a tuxedoed trio playing Tre’-hip Jazz Fusion. The whole place reeked of money, sex and power. Not long ago Hal would have been too intimidated to even set foot in a place like this, but not tonight. Tonight he was carrying a bankroll the size of a Coke can and he was looking for some world class fun to spend it on. What else was money for?

Hal made a lot of money – more than anyone in this place, he was sure. Almost a half million so far this year. How many men in this room could say that? He looked around through half-closed lids with barely concealed contempt. Stockbrokers, Lawyers, Insurance Salesmen, what a bunch of losers, worker bees going nowhere fast. In a couple of years, he thought, I’ll be a multimillionaire. In another ten – who knows? Not like these guys grinding away every month to make the house payment and pay for the kid’s braces.

It had not always been this way. In fact, for most of his life a night like this had been no more than an unreachable fantasy. The kind of thing that happened to other guys. Handsome, charming, successful guys, not him. Hal had not had a single date in high school. He never played sports or belonged to a club. He was not invited to any parties and nobody but Hal’s mother noticed when his Senior picture ended up in the Junior class section of his high school yearbook.

Three months after graduation his grandparents set him up with a woman from their church who was seven years his senior and rented the studio apartment above their garage. It was the first date for both of them and they were married just over a year later.

For the next few years Hal paid his dues. He bounced around from one cheesy job to another. Life was a struggle then, living month to month, barely able to make ends meet, supporting a wife and three kids. If the car broke down or the washing machine went, it constituted a major financial crisis. It was a time of cheap clothes, shabby thrift store furniture and bill collectors. They bought day-old bread, powdered milk and whatever meat was on sale. His wife used to say life was like a shit sandwich and every morning she’d push him out of bed with the admonition to get up and take another bite!

Those were hard times. Hal toughed it out, though, finally landing at Valley Power, putting in an eight year stint as a meter reader. It was a hell of a grind. He had walked the streets with his little metal clipboard in all types of weather, dodging cars, kids on bikes, skateboarders and angry dogs, tediously recording the meters. He hung in through thick and thin – and at night he studied, determined to make something of himself. Determined to break out and become somebody.

For five long years he read diligently and took tests by correspondence to become licensed as a Certified Financial Planner. Meter reader by day – student by night. It had not been easy. He had to sacrifice. He had missed being with his family and dropped out of the church. After a while his friends had stopped inviting him places because he never had time or money to spend. He stuck with it, though, and in the end it paid off. Finally he was an official Certified Financial Planner.

Instead of studying at night he was now out selling life insurance and mutual funds. He worked at it five nights a week and all day Saturday and Sunday. Slowly it began to pay off and one great day he was able to walk away from Valley Power and go fulltime as a Financial Planner. It wasn’t long before he found out he was good at it. Really good.

His reputation grew. He started picking up bigger and bigger clients. His income jumped. He took up golf, bought his first brand new car and joined the Lions Club. He started shopping at exclusive mens shops and sported a Rolex. His increasing success brought him to the attention of his employer. Recognized as a top producer he was given special accounts and a liberal expense account. He was becoming important. People listened to him when he spoke. For Hal this was heady stuff. For the first time in his life he was experiencing what it was like to be a big shot.

But even as his business expanded his small circle of old friends diminished. This was not seen as a big issue for Hal. He simply considered it a tradeoff. Old life for new, in fact, he hardly missed them because he had found a new drug – respect – and he was mainlining it every day – all day long, at the office. Respect from the very people he used to hold in awe. Everywhere he went within the company he got it and made the most of it. He reveled in his new status and could not help emphasizing his contributions to the company success at the slightest opportunity.

He understood numbers and could recognize trends. He knew the investment markets, how to increase yields, avoid taxes and make his clients millions of bucks, but tonight on the eve of his promotion he was celebrating alone. Not one person offered to celebrate with him tonight.

He shrugged that thought off with another shot of Makers and laughed to himself. Just wait, Assholes. This year number one on the West coast – next year I’ll be number in the whole company! Then they will have to stand in line to invite me out. Out to dinner, to the Theatre, company paid vacations in Hawaii. Then it will be, “Hal meet the wife”. “How about a round of golf, Hal”? It will be, “Scoot over boys and make room for old Hal’. His time in the sun was coming and it couldn’t arrive too soon for Hal.

He looked again at his reflection in the mirror across the bar. Flanked by two world class babes he mused on how far he had already come. Not bad for a red headed nerd who never even had a date in high school. It was true he was no longer young. However, along with his new wealth he had acquired confidence and style. He wore contacts now instead of those old Poindexter glasses. He had his teeth bonded, his hair styled and he was sporting a close cropped beard that squared off his otherwise weak chin. His suits were tailored and he had a personal trainer to keep him in shape. The new image brought with it a new attitude. He had even studied old Carey Grant and Errol Flynn movies to mimic how they walked, sat, held a fork and lit a cigarette. Now his every move declared him a man of substance and power. This evening he was determined to have the kind of night a man of his stature deserved. Full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes!

He knocked back another two fingers of bourbon and gave a final salute to the yuppie-doctor-jerkoff at the end of the bar, I win you lose, Kildare. He surveyed the room once more in the mirror. Veni, Vedi, Vici, just like Julius Caesar. Tonight he had come in and established himself as the top dog in this joint. The Alpha male. He was king of the coolest bar in town and he liked the feeling. He decided to make it a habit. He would make up for all that lost time and he would start tonight. Right here, right now. It was the beginning of a new era where he would treat himself to everything he deserved. And, he chuckled to himself, a threesome with two magazine cover beauties will be a good start.

The two of them were driving him wild. The blond kept touching his wrist, playing with his gold bracelet, tracing the links with long graceful fingers. The brunette relentlessly caressed his leg. The more they laughed and pressed themselves against him the more his libido strained at the crotch of his trousers. His intoxication was increased by the scent and touch of such beautiful women. Brushing his ear with their warm, full lips, pressing their breasts against him promising the fulfillment of his long cherished fantasies was almost more than Hal could bear. He kept looking at their breasts. He wanted to reach inside their dresses and pull them out and hold them in his hands. They knew he was looking and liked it. He could tell by the way they were all over him that they wanted it as bad as he did.

He wanted desperately to close the deal – to go somewhere with them, but he had never gotten this far before and he didn’t know what to do. The brunette suddenly suggested they go to her room for a nightcap. As she said it she slid her hand up his leg and gently pressed his crotch. Hal responded by putting his on her leg and sliding it up under dress. When she smiled Hal said, “That would be fun, I’m sure”. He tried to sound elegant, but it came out in a hoarse whisper like the pervert on Laugh-In. The three of them laughed and Hal took them by the elbow and somewhat unsteadily, led them out leaving a conspicuous pile of cash on the bar. He dropped another twenty in the band’s tip jar on the way stopping only long enough for one more triumphant look over his shoulder at

the vanquished yuppie.

Once in the car the brunette began kissing his neck and openly rubbed the lump in his pants. He drove with one hand, sliding his other under her dress again. She spread her legs and moaned in his ear. He drove crazily, weaving all over the road trying to get his hand in her panties, clumsily straining to get his fingers under that tiny strip of lace and stay on the road at the same time. From the back seat came a squeal from the blond, “Save some for me”! And they all laughed again when Hal answered “There’s plenty for everybody”!

Then they were there. It was an upscale Mediterranean style place with arched doorways, palm trees and mosaic tiles. The parking lot was full of BMWs, Lincolns and Jags. The three of them staggered into the room in a panting tangle. The brunette closed the door and immediately began loosening Hal’s tie while she pushed herself against him and undulated slowly while she smiled, “You look so uncomfortable in that suit. Take it off and let’s get comfortable”. She undid a half a dozen buttons and pulled open his shirt and kissed his chest. He ran his fingers down her back and pulled her tight. He had never been pressed up against any other woman in his whole life except his wife and she didn’t look or feel anything like this. He was so hard it hurt. He ground himself against the brunette in delirious ecstasy. They both moaned with pleasure.

Suddenly the blond thrust a drink in his face. “Makers Mark, right”? Hal took it reluctantly releasing half of the brunette’s ass. The brunette kept one hand inside Hal’s shirt and took her drink in the other. She pinched his nipple and cooed, “Why don’t you enjoy your drink and get comfortable and give us a couple of minutes to prepare”? She hooked a finger in his belt and tugged gently as she backed away. The two of them sashayed into the bathroom and closed the door.

Hal downed his drink, kicked off his shoes and fumbled with his belt buckle. He was determined to be ready when they came out. He stripped to his shorts and stopped. Should he keep them on or take them off? He looked at himself in the mirror. He quickly decided to leave them on and jump under the covers and strike a pose. He looked down and laughed. He was pitching a major tent. He patted it and promised it a night of immersion in total bliss. Hal felt good. Really good. Hell, he felt great! In fact, he had never felt this good in his entire life. Every cell in his body seemed to be singing. He snuggled down into the covers. He was so warm and cozy –drifting – and then he was asleep.

His eyes had been open for awhile staring at the white metal ceiling before he realized he was awake and began wondering where he was. He could tell he was moving. A sudden jolt sent a stabbing pain through his right side. He screamed in agony and tried to reach down, but his hands were strapped to the rails of the bed. Instantly there was a hand on his chest and a man in a white coat leaned over and said, “It’s Okay, you are going to be fine. Just take it easy. You are in an ambulance on the way to County Hospital. We’ll have you patched up in no time”. As he spoke the ambulance hit another bump and pain caused him to cry out again. He struggled to ask what happened, but his words came out in unintelligible gasps. The man in white patted his shoulder and told him not to talk. Then he gave Hal an injection and he drifted off again.

When awoke again he was in a hospital bed. The pain was still there though apparently muted by drugs. His hands were still tied to the railing. For a moment sheer terror racked his body. “Where am I”, he screamed, “What is happening”? Two men appeared at his bedside and began to untie his hands. : “It’s Okay, you’re fine. Just a second and we’ll have your hands free. Didn’t want you tearing at your stitches in your sleep”. The speaker was the older of the two. Heavyset, red faced and rumpled. The second was younger, shorthaired and buff. In jeans, tie and tweed jacket – obviously Cops.

“Don’t try to talk yet. You are still pretty drugged up”. He went on, “The maid found you this morning when she came in to clean up. The good news is the Doctor says they didn’t do too bad of a job. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of infection and you should be out of here in a couple of days. The bad news they took your left Kidney. It’s a Hell of a racket. You are the third one this summer. Same M. O. Pick you up in a bar, get you drunk, take you to a room rented with a stolen card, drug you and cut out your kidney. Fetches thirty or forty thousand on the black market. They’re not amateurs either, the Doc said it looked like they knew what they were doing. Lucky for you. We’ve seen some real hack jobs…. . …”.

The old Cop droned on, but Hal was not listening anymore. He was aware only of the awful pain and a need for sleep. Just before he passed out he asked himself how this could happen to the number one man on the West coast, the Alpha male, the……. .

The Independent Living Movement I

Center Park of Seattle, Washington, USA, was founded by Ida May Daly, who had a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. While suffering from this debilitating illness, she managed to get enough public and private donations to buy a huge square block of land near downtown Seattle – and go set it up so that certain people would have a place to actually thrive and live, instead of one in which to waste away and die. She didn’t like what institutionalized or hospitalized living does to people in reality, and how most such places preach an afterlife – involving how you have to die in this lifetime to achieve it.

Nowadays, almost all those Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Hindu, Moslem, private enterprise or whatever institutions in America are united racially. This is due mainly to the efforts of various civil rights aficionados – and via coincidence of circumstances, Center Park is located in what in the 1980s was an African-American neighborhood. That was how the property values were low enough for Ida May Daly to be enabled to purchase the land in that neighborhood. It used to be white and Catholic, earlier – there still are some people from that time frame who live there, as I attended their major church once, and hostilities and frictions that are probably entirely gone by now, although I suspect impoverished people yet reside there.

In the 80s, I worked at Center Park in that neighborhood, and wondered deeply about life itself, being a newbie professional writer and artist, working my day job helping the disabled. I was a live-in personal care attendant, living with and doing daily activities with physically and mentally challenged people, mostly white ones, before the days of the Internet. Back then, they also had Christian study groups, to pass the slow time, and involvement in local and national politics, which was more to my crowd’s liking. I wasn’t much for Christian studies, being too Jewish influenced to ever see myself that way.

Being deeply involved with fragile people with distinctively human lives and bodies, ones which were not so spiritually suited for an afterlife, I used to be sad at how many long years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , alias Michael King, had to keep up such a “preachy” attitude of going on to another place to get rid of such a fallacy. He said he was heading for “the Promised Land,” which everyone disabled or handicapped I have ever met up here in the Pacific Northwest seems to think is indeed – Canada.

Dr. King himself, an African-American of long standing, and a pastor cum reverend at Ebenezer Baptist Church, far away from where we lived at Center Park, performed many of his duties far down in the American South – while we of this article were located in the American Northwest. Therefore I figured he probably meant something else by this catch phrase, “the Promised Land,” such as eternal peace, but many of the disabled I’ve met in the Pacific Northwest would like to live in Canada. It’s kind of an ongoing jest that “we” would all like to move up to the Promised Land, in this era of global warming.

The melting back of the glaciers up north does mean the expansion of the Northwest Territories, and it would be wonderful indeed to slowly be moving northward. The Great Seal of King County, as of 1986, sports the fine but somewhat overweight head of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , in support of all the many things he did for civil rights. This includes work on behalf of the handicapped and disabled, although strangely enough we have yet to see much of a united effort on the part of people of color and the physically challenged, especially on the Internet. It’s odd enough; it’s as though one movement is led by colored people, and the other movement is led by white people. There is thus the Civil Rights Movement, and the Independent Living Movement.

The former group is simply being led by other types of people than the latter group. It seems due to efforts on the part of both the left wing and the right wing of political participants, and so the disabled are led significantly by white men in wheelchairs at this point in time, in the year 2007. Dr. King’s face on the Great Seal doesn’t seem to have changed this any, although all of the city busses are now wheelchair accessible. Also, the days when the bus was “demarcated” for black people to be forced to ride in the back of the bus, with brown outlined windows signifying this, are over, as Mayor Norm Rice of Seattle went ahead and repainted the bus windows about a decade ago.

We had our usual struggles between racial groups, typical of what you may have seen before, and now the buses are almost fully together when it comes to human rights. There are still some odd issues involving Native American rights – there are municipal and county buses where an area is demarcated for “red” skinned people. I don’t know if anyone is ever going to change that, but I do know no one is forcing aboriginal people to ride in the backs of the buses – there are simply red outlined windows in the far back which are obviously more than a mere coincidence. No “Indians” are forced to sit back there, and I doubt much farther will be done about the bus painting arrangement.

It’s similar to the large red black and white “No Smoking” huge signs on the Washington State Ferry system’s large ferry boats; the symbol screams of being a swastika derivative, but nobody Jewish is making any complaints about it. People are too used to it to make any real fuss over something as subtle and hidden as such signs are in public. Nonetheless, the “brown skinned” population of Seattle may make a move against these signs, someday, if someone other than me finally sees them in their own clarity.

Chief Sealth, a Native American or aboriginal, was the brown of color man our Emerald City of Seattle in Washington State was named after, and he resides currently in a grave near an aboriginal people’s reservation. He was the leader of a tribe hereabouts, the name of which I have forgotten. He gave a wonderful “final” speech where he handed over his tribal lands, possibly the Duwamish were involved, and he asserted in a noble and peaceful way that “we” who now live here might be able to handle the privilege. I myself keep hoping someone will do something about those “red” demarcated bus windows. I’m sure Chief Sealth would not like his people to be stuck with such a set of circumstances. And I suppose the Jewish community may or may not ever do anything about the giant “No Smoking” swastika style signs on the ferry boats, against white skinned people.

But who is the true Chief of Seattle; is it the Mayor, or someone else? Many communities exist here in our lovely area, led by many an interested party or person. But what makes a person such a being of involvement? Is it his or her heart, or brains, or beaucoup bucks that do this, or the fact there must be someone for greatness to be thrust upon? What is “greatness” really – is it something that is simply there for certain people, in a certified and given time, in a definite and realistic way? And is greatness something achievable by just anyone, or is it only for specific people, ones who know what they are doing?

Someone – everyone needs to be “a somebody,” like Jesse Jackson, one of Dr. King’s own men in their times, once put it; he said that you really should become that somebody. In a way, that will always be my John Tyler, part Indian or Native American, part white man, who ruled one floor of a multi-story apartment building as a radical who fought for the rights and freedoms of the underprivileged handicapped American. He was ably assisted by one Jewish liberal named Ronald Gary Schwarz, who had been a Republican before he became disabled, and who when disabled, finally had found his life’s purpose was to assist those in wheelchairs to finally enable themselves to live their lives. These two blokes in wheelchairs were my mentors and friends when we are stayed at Center Park, there situated in the mostly Black People area of town, the Central Area.

Seven Simple Steps That Will Help Save You Hundreds Of Dollars A Month

If you use all of the following steps then you’ll save several hundred dollars a month, and even if you only want to use some of them, you’ll save a lot of money, so don’t just read the advice, but please act on it too.

1) Go To The Supermarket Less Often And Always Take A List

Going to the supermarket less frequently and only buying what’s on your list will save you a lot of money every month!

It’s a well known fact that people without a shopping list buy several things that they didn’t intend to buy every time they visit a supermarket, and that’s what supermarkets are designed to do.

Supermarket managers have things moved to different locations all the time so that you have to go searching for them, and they know that whilst searching that you’ll likely buy things that you had no intention of buying when you came into the store.

So if you go less often, and even if you still buy some unintended things you’ll save money.

2) Don’t Buy Credit Card Insurance

Most credit card companies offer at least four different kinds of insurance:

1) Life and/or AD&D (Accidental Death & Dismemberment) insurance means that when you die your credit card balance will be paid off.

“Life Insurance” should obviously be called death insurance, but it doesn’t sound so nice!

2) Disability Insurance, will pay your minimum credit card payments for a limited amount of time if you become disabled.

3) Critical Illness Insurance, will pay your minimum payments for a limited amount of time if you get sick.

4) Involuntary Job Loss Insurance will pay your minimum payments for a limited amount of time if you get laid off.

Only #1 pays off your debt and you have to die for that to happen, and the others will only pay your minimum card payment for a limited amount of time, and because of interest charges you’ll most likely find that you owe more money than you did before, when you have to start paying again.

N. B. Most credit card companies include free travel insurance when you buy a ticket using their card, so be sure to check if yours does, and if does, then make sure they include it.

3) Get Rid Of Your Telephone Land-line

Cell phone companies are offering great packages now, and many of them are pushing unlimited airtime for just an extra few bucks a month, meaning that less and less people are paying for incoming calls, and since landlines are never charged for incoming calls, you don’t have to worry about your friends getting charged if you call their land-line.

You can also use Skype which offers high quality phone calls pretty much worldwide from computer to computer free of charge, and to landlines and cell phones at a very low cost, and GoogleTalk offers free high quality calls between any two computers that have it installed. If you want to keep your land-line however, then think about dropping extras such as caller id, call waiting, call forwarding, and long distance which are probably costing you around $40 per month.

BTW – you can make 911 calls from a land-line that’s been disconnected, as long as it’s plugged in of course

4) Your Tap Water Is Probably Safer Than Bottled Water

Around 40% of bottled water began its life as tap water, and the only likely difference is added minerals that may actually be harmful. The French Senate even advises people who drink bottled mineral water to change brands frequently because the added minerals are helpful in small amounts, but may be dangerous in higher doses.

A great number of countries, and the U. S. included, have stricter regulations for tap water than for bottled water, and the water quality standards that are set by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) for tap water are stricter than the ones set by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for bottled water.

How about the taste?

In taste tests that were carried out all over the U. S. people often said that the tap water tasted better than the bottled water, and in a recent test at the West Side County Fair in Riverside Park people were tasted from two jugs of water, one containing “Poland Springs” water, and the other straight from the tap, and out of the 86 people who took the taste test, 61 thought the tap water tasted better.

5) Cut Back On The Cable TV

Take a look at what’s in your cable package and think about the last time you watched some of the junk that you’re paying good money for. The internet has far better news coverage than cable stations, and if you want to watch sport then pay per view might be a better option. There might be some soaps or favorite programs that you feel you’d miss, but ask yourself if they’re worth the $50 a month that they might be costing you.

6) Cook Extra Food At Home To Eat At Work

Not only will you save a lot of money by taking food from home and eating it at work, but you’ll also eat a lot more healthily if you choose to. To save time in the morning, simply put the food in a reusable container at night so that you just have to take it out of the fridge in the morning. Most workplaces have a microwave, and if they don’t then many foods such as chicken taste as good or better cold than they do hot.

7) Cappuccino and latte

There’s certainly nothing wrong with going to a coffee shop with friends to have a latte or cappuccino, but $4-5 bucks a day every working day sure adds up fast, and you can buy an espresso machine for around $50 which will pay for itself in a month.

Smoking, Drinking And Gambling

I didn’t mention smoking, drinking or gambling because people that indulge in them know only too well what they cost and how much they’d save by not indulging in them, and they certainly don’t need me to tell them to cut out, or to cut back on, what they consider to be, one or more of life’s little pleasures.

The Seller’s Market Survives in Tidewater

The National Real Estate PerspectiveEach month I write an article explaining various aspects of national real estate market trends and the market trends within my local region, the Tidewater/Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Over the last six months I have seen many changes, read many opinions and confronted a variety of consumer fears. One fact that is clear: the experts believe the real estate market is still strong and the slowdown many areas of the country are experiencing is a natural adjustment and should be expected after the boom of 2005. David Pressly, president of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), in a March 31 press release on the NAHB web site stated “understandably, some consumers are concerned about the housing market right now. ” “But the recent decline is certainly no cause for alarm,” Pressly continues, “The past year was a remarkable one for home builders, but the extremely high sales numbers would be hard pressed to continue at that pace. Even as we transition to more realistic sales numbers in 2006, buying a home will remain an excellent investment. ” This is good news for sellers. Long Term Mortgage Rates Hit A Four Year HighIn the month of April there have been noticeable increases in mortgage rates across the nation. According to the April 14, 2006 Realty Times report the Primary Mortgage Market Survey released by Freddie Mac indicates long term mortgage rates are higher than they have been in four years. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6. 49 percent, a high not reached since the week of July 12, 2002. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6. 14 percent, a high last reached on July 13, 2002. Freddie Mac currently predicts 30-year mortgage rates will move between 6. 25 percent 6. 75 percent during 2006. Adjustable Rate Mortgages have also increased when compared to April of 2005. This increase in mortgage rates shouldn’t scare sellers though. David Lereah, NAR’s chief economist, states, “economic growth and job creation are providing a favorable backdrop for the housing market, but rising interest rates have an offsetting effect. ” “Home sales will move up and down somewhat over the remainder of the year but stay at a high plateau, meaning this will be the third strongest year on record,” continues Lereah. The Real Estate Scene in Tidewater and Hampton Roads, Virginia Across the United States the real estate market has slowed. However, in the Tidewater and Hampton Roads region of coastal Virginia, which includes Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, York County, Smithfield and many other wonderful locations, the real estate market continues to favor sellers while adjusting. Although mortgage rates continue to increase, home values also continue to rise. The explosive nature of the sellers market in 2005 seems to have dissipated, however, in places like York County buyer overbidding on a prime property is not unheard of. In York County the Grafton School district makes real estate highly desirable for families. As always the key to real estate is three words: LOCATION, LOCATION, and LOCATION! In the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area a strong economy, supported by the military and tourism industry, and access to a variety of activities such as golf, water sports, hiking, boating, fishing, historical sights and the arts attracts a wide variety of home buyers, from retirees to families, relocating to the region.
