@Salticid68 Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t it seem sort of lame that you’re nitpicking the only person in that whole room that stood up for your rights?
She was the only one who defended deaf Americans, but you still don’t seem very happy to have been supported simply because she used the wrong term, even though she was using the politically correct word “handicapped”.
I realize that deafness isn’t really a “handicap” but it falls into that legal category.

They’re hierarchical mammals. They’re lazy to be civilized. I maybe applaud her for her integrity & brave, but it’s offensive to call us handicap. We aren’t handicap, because we can do anything except hear things that are designed by and for hearing people. Handicap means they can’t be independence or work except for menial jobs. Disable means they can do some work with little or some helps and can be independence. However, definitions of them were changed or are different in some dictionaries.

@TheStarWarriorHorse You have it backward. Deaf isn’t an offensive word. “Hearing Impaired” is! 99% of Deaf people like me are happy with the former word.

Bigotry is apparently (and unfortunately) incurable. Especially among people of his generation where it would seem being a bigot is not neccissarily more rampant per se, but more accepted as folly. What a complete jackass this Mr. Martin publically shows himself to be. What a shame.

People have to be careful about what they say. He could simply be trying to be sarcastic, but, yet again, it would be the same thing as calling a mentally disabled person a “retard”. It’s offensive and shouldn’t be used, especially in serious pubic meetings like this.

I am an apartment leasing agent. You cannot write ads or refuse to rent against the Fair Housing Act with regard to age, handicap/disability, religion, sexual preferance, color/race, or national origin. This matter is not about housing but it’s certainly might be a hate crime.

I completely disagree with what Martin says. Let me just say that first. However, I have scanned the comments and all I am reading is negativity regarding this is individual, which he deserves. I understand. But, my question is, why in no one applauding Ellis-Marseglia (the woman featured)? She immediately jumps to the defense of the deaf. I commend her. Yes, what this man said was utterly insensitive but we should focus on the good more often than the bad IMO. Sry for ranting

They look like a bunch of people who couldn’t give a stuff unless it concerns them. I find this insulting because my best friend is deaf n can lip read. If i was deaf I would be making an extremly big complaint to council, Goverment and to also to the guy who had spoken the insult. Along with evidence. These guys just keep getting redicules
