Need help with getting car out of the impound?

On 11/15/2009, I had been pulled over by police in Oakley, CA for a brake light out. I soon found out that I had a warrant for my arrest in a different county for not completing community service days. I was already put in jail on labor day weekend for this same case, was bailed out, but apparently the District Attorney of San Mateo County felt I still needed to do jail time and didn’t inform me of any of that. Either way, I was put in jail and did the time. My main concern at this point is my car, they impounded it and i’ve been getting charged bucks a day. When i was arrested, my drivers license was fine, I could legally drive, my roommate had saw me getting arrested and offered to drive my car home which was only 1/2 mile down the road. The cops just told him to go away pretty much, so my question is that can i fight this? Can I take this to there traffic court with my roommate and have a valid arguement because i simply cannot afford this and might lose my car.
